|ISIS International Affairs Forum on "Strategic Developments in South Asia"|
By Dr Maria Sultan
South Asia is the only region in the world where two independent nuclear weapons states with major security disagreements border each other - India and Pakistan - and sits astride a third - China. South Asia also is plagued by an increasingly deadly mixture of local, regional and international terrorist organisations. Furthermore, there are global transitions at play in the region including the growing defence and security collaboration between the US and India and likewise deeper cooperation between Pak-China and Russia. The impact of these transitions combined with the growing economic collaboration is likely to place South Asia centre stage and affect the global and strategic transition in Asia Pacific.
