Dialogue: New Approaches and Strategies for National Unity and Integration Under The Harapan Government

The recent change of the Malaysian government on a wave of popular support has raised hopes that national unity and integration, recurrent issues since Malayan independence and later the formation of Malaysia can be addressed in new and more effective ways. Ethnic, religious, territorial and now class tensions have largely been kept below the surface. This has enabled pluralism to continue and the nation to prosper. In recent years, however, incidences of tension appear to have risen. Of greater concern is the fact that these incidences have been met with indifference or even support by some in government. The Harapan government now has an opportunity to unhinge these issues from their traditional moorings and set a course for a truly “new” Malaysia.

This meeting invites members of the Harapan government to a free-flowing dialogue with the heads/representatives of Malaysian think tanks and thought leaders. This event aims to spur more work on the subject of unity and integration at this critical juncture in the nation’s history.

Australia in a Changing Geostrategic Environment (Australian High Commission KL - ISIS Malaysia)

Australia's Foreign Policy White Paper

HE Mr Andrew Goledzinowski AM
Australia’s High Commisioner to Malaysia

Australia’s 2017 Foreign Policy White Paper delivers a framework to advance Australia’s prosperity and security in an increasingly uncertain and contested world. In a time of rapid political, economic and technological change, the Indo-Pacific region, with Southeast Asia at its heart, has become increasingly important to Australia.

The White Paper shows that Australia will work hard with our trusted partners and friends, like Malaysia, to realise a secure, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific. The historic outcome of GE14 presents a unique opportunity to discuss how we can continue working together on shared challenges and opportunities in the region.

The Australian High Commission in Malaysia, in partnership with Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia, is proud to present a discussion on Australia’s relationship with Malaysia and the wider Indo-Pacific region. This event will open with an address by Australia’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, His Excellency Mr Andrew Goledzinowski AM.
