The goods & services tax (GST) can have wide-ranging benefits for the nation’s public revenue, fiscal space, and tax compliance. Institute of Strategic & International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia’s senior analyst Calvin Cheng emphasised that in the future, re-introducing the GST at a lower revenue-neutral rate of between 3.5% and 4% could facilitate a smoother transition to the new tax regime and alleviate the short-term burden on households, particularly those with lower incomes.
