A more internationalist Indonesia under Prabowo?

As Prabowo Subianto assumes the presidency on 20 October 2024, Indonesia will have a leader known for his far-reaching vision for the country’s role on the global stage. As defence minister over the past five years, Prabowo has led a significant build-up of the Indonesian armed forces while actively voicing his perspectives on various global issues. Even as president-elect, Prabowo has proactively engaged with his future counterparts, including those of major powers. What are likely to be Indonesia’s foreign, economic and defence priorities under a Prabowo presidency? What are probably the key constraints that he will face? How will Indonesia navigate the strategic and technological rivalries between major powers? How should Southeast Asian neighbours, including Malaysia, anticipate and respond?
