The 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP29) is scheduled to take place between 11-22 November in Baku, Azerbaijan. As the political climate grows increasingly polarised and the Global North-South divide deepens, all against the backdrop of worsening climate impacts and inadequate measures (including support mechanisms for developing nations) to address them, there is a need to realign the expectations and actions needed to achieve the equitable 1.5°C goal as outlined in the Paris Agreement. This is especially vital to Malaysia as a developing nation in a vulnerable region. As a precursor to COP29, this programme aims to explore Malaysia’s role in international climate negotiations, provide an overview on key climate agendas and form a cohesive Malaysian narrative for national representatives and key stakeholders to put forward and pursue during the conference. Join our COP29 masterclass to help shape Malaysia’s role in international climate negotiations and complement our national strategy to champion equitable solutions for a sustainable future.
*Please note that this programme is closed-door and limited to certain parties only. Recipients are asked not to send/share this invitation to outside parties.
This programme will bring together various stakeholders, with an emphasis on learning through sharing by experts and interactive breakout sessions. The objectives include:
- To understand Malaysia’s national priorities in fulfilling climate goals as well as the dynamics of climate negotiations at the international level;
- To explore key agendas at COP29 and relate them to national contexts, including the just energy transition; new collective quantified goal (NCQG); enhanced transparency framework (ETF) and nationally determined contributions (NDCs); response measures; Article 6; and more;
- To provide an alternative platform for stakeholders from various sectors and backgrounds to provide and exchange perspectives on Malaysia’s climate ambitions, in advocating for and achieving equitable progress at the global negotiations level.
