Deepening Sino-US tensions: implications for Malaysia and Southeast Asia

    Both the United States and China are adding more pressure to their already strained bilateral relationship, with President Joe Biden unveiling details of the AUKUS security pact and Chinese President Xi Jinping consolidating his grip on power at the annual parliamentary meetings. Having recently returns from Washington DC, James Crabtree, executive director of IISS-Asia, will provide a briefing on the latest developments in US policy thinking, and outline the Biden administrationā€™s dilemmas as it tries to balance Chinaā€™s rising power without taking provocative and destabilising actions in the region.

    Crabtree plays a leading role in organising the annual IISS Shangri-La Dialogue and the IISS Fullerton Forum: the Shangri-La Sherpa Meeting, as well as the IISS Fullerton lecture series.
