“Getting Off the Menu, to the Table: Developing a Cadre of Cyber Diplomats”

Cyber and emerging technology are catalysts to increase standard of living and a nation’s wealth. In this space, an increasing number of countries have been training and deploying ambassadors-at-large and skilled diplomats with a cyber portfolio. As the interrelation between cyber, law and industries become more complex, the need to develop a cadre of capable cyber diplomats is imperative to promote and defend Malaysia’s interest and industries. To this end, with various agencies in Malaysia involved in cyber diplomacy, do diplomats need to be well-versed in cyber and technology? How is cyber diplomatic capability trained and developed? What are Malaysia’s possible roles in cyber diplomacy and possible limitations for engagement? Could developing a cyber diplomatic toolkit be useful to get Malaysia off the menu and onto the table for cyber diplomatic matters?
