Implications of COVID-19 for Sustainable Development in Malaysia: A Conversation with Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in 2015, and embedded in the 11th Malaysia Plan and the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030. However, COVID-19 has disrupted progress towards the SDGs and sustainable development. While the initial response has been to focus on suppressing transmission, the ensuing socio-economic impacts will require recovery strategies that can contribute to Malaysia’s future development more broadly. What are the lessons from COVID-19 for the interdependent nature of development? What are the key strategies, policies or sectors that Malaysia should focus on to better recover from the crisis? How can Malaysia transition to become more resilient to future crises as they are more likely to occur due to climate change, environmental damage,resource depletion, financialization and other emerging challenges?
