Join the Japan Malaysia Association (JMA) and Institute of Strategic & International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Look East Policy (LEP) and 65th anniversary of Malaysia-Japan relations.
Themed ‘Past, present and future’, the event features a book launch on the LEP, titled 40 Years of Look East Policy 1982-2022, published by the JMA. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will deliver the keynote address and officiate the book launch. Author Akiko Kato will present the highlights of the book.
The second half of the event will be an interactive Malaysia-Japan forum focusing on contemporary issues and future direction of bilateral relations. Topics include the impact of current government policies, future directions of the LEP, societal issues and the impact of major power competition on the Malaysia-Japan relationship.

Look East 40 chronicles the Look East Policy’s inceptions to the present day. As part of her research, Kato interviewed relevant personalities including Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali. The publication serves to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Look East Policy and re-introduce the policy to the Malaysian and Japanese public.
